Can Funding Cow be used to fund anything?
Yes. All creative projects with an ethical angle are welcomed too.
Everything on Funding Cow must also be a campaign. A campaign has a clear goal, like making a film, writing a screenplay, working on a new app. A campaign will eventually be completed, and something will be produced by it.
Funding Cow allows charity and sponsor led causes especially “fund my life” projects.
Our staff does a quick review of projects before they launch to ensure they fit this criteria.
What are some things I should do before launching my project?
— Make a detailed budget of your costs. Use this to set your funding goal.
— Look closely at other Funding Cow projects.
— Get ideas from friends, family and even strangers about what rewards to offer and other project ideas.
Campaigns on Funding Cow are always exciting so.. make sure you are ready to enjoy the special journey.. Follow the Cow on Twitter @fundingcow and tell us all about your campaign.
What is the maximum project duration?
Projects on Funding Cow can last anywhere from 1 – 60 days.
We recommend that project deadlines are set at 28 days or less. Why? Well, because.. shorter durations have higher success rates
What information should I share on my project page?
After visiting your project page backers should have a clear sense of:
— What it is you are trying to do
— How you will do it
— How the funds will be used
— Your qualifications to complete this project
— The identities of the people on your team (if you have one)
— How far along your project is
The more information you share, the more you will earn your backers’ trust.
Is a video required to launch? How do I make a good one?
Videos are not required to launch, but projects with a video succeed at a much higher rate (50% vs. 30%), and they also raise more money.
Your project video’s file size must be 5GB or less and one of the following file types: MOV, MPEG, AVI, MP4, 3GP, WMV, FLV
For video encoding, use WMV format in Windows. On Mac, use H.264. In both cases, the key variable is the “bit rate,” so look for that box. If it’s measured in kilobits per second (kbps), try 1500 to start. If it’s measured in megabits per second (Mbps), try 1.5. If the file is too big: Make that number smaller. If the quality seems bad: Make it bigger.
What can be offered as a reward?
Rewards are typically items produced by the project itself — a copy of the CD, a print from the show, a limited edition of the comic. Most projects also offer creative experiences: a visit to the set, naming a character after a backer, a personal phone call.
Rewards tiers can be set for any pledge amount, up to the maximum pledge. Rewards must all be eligible per our project guidelines, which includes a list of prohibited items and subject matter.
Is there a way to limit the quantity of a reward?
Yes with Funding Cow you can! When building your project, there’s a place to select “Limit # available.”
You can also mark a reward tier as sold out at any point during your project’s duration, and increase or decrease reward limits (or remove them altogether) at any time.
What does estimated delivery date mean?
The estimated delivery date for a reward is the date you expect to deliver that reward to backers. If you’re offering more than one thing in a single reward tier, set your estimated delivery date to when you expect everything in the reward tier to be delivered.
How do I charge shipping on my reward?
In general, the cost to mail your backers their rewards (postage, envelopes, etc.) should be taken into account when you set your goal and price your rewards.
Keep in mind that unless you specify otherwise, backers can pledge to your project from anywhere in the world. It’s always fun to have a backer from across the globe, but it can also mean paying for international postage to send rewards overseas.
If you’d rather not ship internationally, you can configure a reward tier so that only domestic shipping is available. Just be sure to set the ‘Shipping Details’ drop down accordingly when creating the reward tier. This restriction will be presented in the reward’s description and repeated to backers throughout the checkout process.
Can projects raise more than their goal?
Yes. Projects remain live on Funding Cow until their funding deadline. That means it’s entirely possible for a project to be over funded. In that case, the creator receives all of the additional funds (less fees). Some creators use these additional funds to increase the scale or scope of their project, while others improve the quality or variety of backer rewards available.
Can funding be canceled?
If I choose a subcategory, will my project also show up in the main category?
Yes. For example, if your project is a Music project and you put it in the Music subcategory, your project will appear in the Popular section of Music as well as on the general campaign site.
Can I run more than one project at once?
We rarely permit running multiple projects at the same time, or launching a second project before fulfilling your first one. Having multiple live projects can confuse backers and split support. Running a project is a lot of work, and more than one live project will likely dilute your attention and energy. There may be exceptions out there, but that’s generally how it works. If you’re a first-time creator and have multiple project ideas, we recommend selecting the one that’s most developed and trying that first.
I am worried someone will steal my idea?
Funding Cow is about connecting and sharing ideas. We believe that any fresh idea coming from you would be successful if you put it to test in a testing ground such as Funding Cow. There is a very common saying “Put your money where your mouth is”. That’s what this platform is here for.
Can I share my project with friends when i launch?
Yes and after you launch. You should share with any and everyone. The more you share, the more people will find out about your project and the more excitement you will generate for potential backers.
How do I include images or other media in my project description?
You can include photos and images in your project description by uploading them from your computer. They must be 10MB or less and one of the following file types: JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP.
You can also embed videos and audio in your project description and updates (e.g., from Youtube, Vimeo, SoundCloud, Flickr, etc.). However, you cannot embed your main project video; you must upload the original video file.
How long does a project remain on Funding Cow?
Forever! Projects are not closed or taken down, they remain on site for reference and transparency.
For the same reasons, projects cannot be deleted, even if they were canceled or unsuccessful. Please note that deleting your Funding Cow account will not delete your project.
Can I use copyrighted material as part of my project?
Don’t use music, images, video, or other content that you don’t have the rights to. Using copyrighted material is almost always against the law and can lead to expensive lawsuits down the road.
The easiest way to avoid copyright troubles altogether, though, is to create all the content yourself or use content that is free for public use. For example, you may be able to use some Creative Commons-licensed music — per the terms of their licenses — that’s available on SoundCloud. Other resources worth exploring: Vimeo Music Store, Free Music Archive, and ccMixter.
Is there a maximum reward tier value?
Is a Paypal account required to launch a project?
A verified Paypal account is required to launch a project. This can be easily set up. It takes less than a few minutes to set up a paypal account on www.paypal.com and a few hours to get it verified.
Funding Cow, will also sometimes contact you directly if we deem your account requires further verification.
How long does it take to build and launch a campaign ?
If you have already put together what your project is, your reward tiers and know what you want. It will take less than a few minutes to set up a campaign.
If you are trying to launch in a hurry, there are a few things to keep in mind. Before you can submit your project, you must verify your identity and configure a payments account. If there are complications or discrepancies with the information provided, it’s possible it may take longer. Once this step is completed, a project may be submitted for review.
Does Funding Cow review projects before launch?
Yes we do. A member of our Project Specialist team does a quick review of each project to make sure it meets our guidelines. They’re verifying that it’s a project that falls in line with our categories, and that it has a specific, finite goal. They do not investigate a creator’s ability to complete their project. Project Specialists may also offer the creator helpful feedback on ways to structure or present their project.
Why include Charities?
Funding for charities and causes is worthy and well needed, but it’s great to have a platform that brings creative projects to life as well as a vehicle for raising much needed funds for various causes.
Why review projects?
We have to make sure Funding Cow adheres to certain standards and reviewing projects gives us a chance to make sure our audience of supporters feel that this the campaigns available are more qualitative than quantitative.
To review a project, a member of the team will watch the project video, read the description, and take a look at the rewards.
If everything looks good, the project is approved. The project will then be immediately launched and will go live on the site.
Can a campaign be edited after launching on Funding Cow?
Yes! Project creators can edit any of the following, even after launching their project.
— Project description
— Project video and image
— New rewards, or rewards without backers
The following cannot be edited once a project has launched.
— Funding goal
— Project deadline
— Funding Cow profile name
— Rewards tiers that have already been selected by a backer
What is my responsibility for answering questions from backers and non-backers?
People will reach out during the course of the project with questions about your project. These may range from queries on delivery dates to specific technical questions. These inquiries should be answered promptly and, in cases where other backers are asking the same information, publicly with a project update and through your Project FAQ (under your project description). Transparency is vital on Funding Cow.
Can projects be edited after funding is completed?
No. Every project is remains as a history and testimonial to encourage others to join the Funding Cow cause. We encourage you to also contact us with updates on your project even after you have recieved funding as it would be great to profile you on Funding Cow. We always like to hear your success stories.
How can i get my campaign featured on the top homepage slider?
Funding Cow staff will from time to time select campaigns that we deem deserve to be heavily featured. If yours meets our criteria you might stand the lucky chance.
Where can I find my project on Funding Cow?
Every project that launches will be on fundingcow.org/campaign
Lots of people who come to Funding Cow browse around for new projects to back but you should be out there doing the hardwork spreading the word. Success for every Funding Cow campaign requires action. So you need to get out there and spread the word.
If I am unable to complete my campaign as promised, what should I do?
If you realize that you will be unable to follow through on your campaign before funding has ended, you are expected to cancel it. If your project is successfully funded, you are required to fulfill all rewards or refund any backer whose reward you do not or cannot fulfill. A failure to do so could result in damage to your reputation or even legal action by your backers.
If you have any issues. Please, make sure you communicate immediately, openly, and honestly with your backers.
If my campaign is successfully funded how do I receive my funds?
If your project is successfully funded, the funds are debited directly from backers paypal account or card to yours minus 5% of the total and any paypal or thirdparty transfer fees. Please. allow at least a 10 day window for collecting and processing pledges. Once the 10-day window has passed, funds will be transferred directly to your bank account. In most cases funds can be processed within or before the 10 day period is elapsed.
What happens if a backer’s credit card is declined?
When a backer’s payment cannot be collected, their pledge is displayed with an errored status in your Backer Report.
These backers are sent email instructions to fix their pledge, and they receive periodic email reminders throughout the following week. These backers can also log in to the Funding Cow account from which they pledged to follow a Fix Payment link. They have 7 days from the project’s deadline to update their payment method. If they do not do so during that period, the collection attempts will stop and they will appear in a Dropped Backers section of your Backer Report.
